DESCRIPTION
Mycoplasma Transport Broth is a liquid medium used for the collection and transport of clinical specimens (e.g. vaginal and urethral swabs, seminal fluid, etc.) containing Trichomonas vaginalis, Gardnerella vaginalis, Candida spp, mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas from the collection site to the testing laboratory. The broth may be used as an enrichment medium as well.
PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD
Mycoplasma Transport Broth can sustain viability of fragile organisms during the period of time elapsed from specimen collection to laboratory processing.
The highly nutritive formula allows microbial growth when the broth culture is incubated under appropriate conditions.

Final pH 7.3 ± 0.2
PROCEDURE FOR USE
1. Allow tubes to come to room temperature before using.
2. Collect the specimen preferably from the site where the suspected organism is most likely to be found, with as little external contamination as possible, and at the clinical stage of disease most likely to yield a positive culture.
3. a) Place the specimen into the tube and send to the laboratory for prompt analysis. Mycoplasma Transport Broth will maintain viability of many microorganisms for 72 hours. It is a common practice to refrigerate specimens to minimize growth of contaminant bacteria and fungi, nonetheless certain organisms, such as T. vaginalis, seem to have a better recovery when kept at room temperature.
b) Inoculate the medium directly with the clinical specimen and incubate at 36±1°C for 36-72 hours for cultivating mycoplasma.
4. Subculture onto appropriate agar plates.
